The Love Shack – February 14th – Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom

Estimated read time 3 min read

Valentine’s Day may be a “Hallmark Holiday” but music was in the air at Cervantes’ Ballroom this year and whether they were in love or looking for love, out of love or in lust, the nearly capacity crowd came to party at “The Love Shack,” the newest themed superjam dance party from the guys over at J2G Live. David Murphy and members of The Disco Biscuits, The Motet and countless other bands proved this wasn’t just another jam session as they delivered the goods.

The String Cheese Incident – December 28th – 1stBank Center

Estimated read time 5 min read

Just like last year, the first night of String Cheese Incident’s New Year’s run at 1st Bank Center was relatively sparsely attended. The room was a little over half-full and though it allowed for plenty of room to dance and move freely from the floor to the stands, the room lacked the electric energy that can make a String Cheese show such a magical experience. There were flashes of brilliance and some powerful horn fueled jams, but when all was said and done this was just an average incident.

Robert Walter’s 20th Congress – August 16th – Cervantes’ Other Side

Estimated read time 5 min read

Cervantes’ Other Side just be made for funky, soulful music, and considering the history of Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom, maybe it was. The presence of Robert Walter’s 20th Congress soaked the walls with more soul. The night had a special meaning for local openers Fox Street Allstars, whose bond as a band has been solidified by trips to New Orleans Jazz Fest in search of Jazz, Funk and Soul. Lead guitarist James Dumm excitedly stated, “we have been listening to this band since we were 16. This guy means a lot to us.”

Fox Street Allstars (CD Release Party) – March 2nd – Larimer Lounge

Estimated read time 6 min read

The Larimer Lounge is a dive bar, pure and simple; it’s a little out of the way, wires hang from the low ceiling, and the walls are plastered with simple posters for upcoming shows, but last Saturday it was transformed into a Southern Juke Joint when Fox Street Allstars threw the album release party for their sophomore album Tough Talk. The sounds of R&B, Funk, and gritty, Whiskey soaked Rock-n-Roll spilled out on the street all night as the temperature inside climbed and bodies rubbed together on the dancefloor.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – September 27th – Pepsi Center

Estimated read time 2 min read

Last Thursday, the Red Hot Chili Peppers finally made it to Denver to play the show that was rescheduled from way back in March when Anthony Kiedis was forced to have surgery on his foot. While guitarist Josh Klinghoffer was the one in a foot cast this time around, the show went on as planned and by all accounts they rocked The Can with a monster show that fans had been waiting a long time for. While reports were that the room sounded pretty good, the energy was diluted a bit without a sweaty crush of bodies pressing up against the stage.

Last Thursday night the mighty Red Rocks Amphitheatre was transformed into an intimate little Blues club as B.B. King and Tedeschi-Trucks Band tag teamed the venue. Phish – 8/31, 9/1, 9/2 – Dick’s Sporting Goods Park

Estimated read time 7 min read

So, let’s get this out of the way right off the bat, was Phish’s Friday night show at Dick’s the “best Phish show of the 3.0 era?” We’re not sure how it possibly could have been. Yes it had it’s moments, mostly due to the shenanigans of nodding to last year’s “S” show by spelling out “FUCK YOUR FACE” with the setlist, but overall the show was pretty uneven musically. It just didn’t flow like the other two nights of the run that featured some of the most fluid sets we’ve heard out of this band in years.

String Cheese Incident – December 2nd & 3rd – New York City

Estimated read time 8 min read

These two nights in New York City showcased two very different sides of The String Cheese Incident. It was almost a Jekyll and Hyde situation. I went in to Friday night with great expectations for a show that would keep us dancing late into the night, and instead got one of the slower, and darker, String Cheese shows that I have ever seen. On Saturday, the boys put their best foot forward and gave a show full of raging peaks, massive sandwiches, and even a Radiohead cover.
